Alternative income solutions for people with disabilities and health conditions, in the world of home based business, by Rex Harris
On October 23rd, 2008 I will be facing one the greatest challenges I’ve faced, to date, in my life. On March 27th of 1970 I was born with a defective aortic heart valve. A normal valve consists of three leaves and is considered tri-cuspid. My aortic valve is bi-cuspid, meaning there are only two leaves. This has caused a condition in my heart that requires the replacement of this valve.
The upside to all of this is the fact that, as a home business owner, even though there will be down time in the hospital, I won’t be forced to miss 6 to 8 weeks of work that I couldn’t do off line or away from the house.
Owning a home based business offers many advantages. Many of my clients are people who are working from home due to disability or other health related conditions that will not allow them to work a regular job. There is a large portion of the home business community that falls into this demographic.
As someone facing a temporary disability due to a health issue, I’m very thankful to have a full time home based business to fall back on when I return home from my surgery.
If you fall into this bracket and are in a similar situation where you are forced to work from home to earn your living, I would like to offer you a few strategies that you can use to improve the results you are seeing through your marketing efforts online.
1.) Don’t be afraid to be you! The beauty of what we do as home business rests in the fact that we are unique. However, none of us are so unique that we won’t be able to find those who can relate with us in one way or another. You will find that targeting individuals who may be dealing with the same or similar challenges, that you face, will be a win – win situation for both parties. While I don’t suggest jumping on a particular bandwagon, so to speak, I think it’s important for us to share details to the extent that people can relate with us. You will find it much easier to build a relationship with someone who can relate with on one level or another versus someone you have nothing in common with.
2.) Incorporate a “my story mentality” into your blogs, articles and any other content you create online. Always work toward the goal of sharing quality information and strategies that will be of a benefit to the reader. When someone takes information from your blog, for example, and applies what they have learned (to see it work) they will come back for more. This is a great strategy for opening the lines of traffic to your site and the development of a relationship with your reader base.
3.) Advertise on your blogs! I highly recommend joining a affiliate program (something that falls in line with the overall message on focus of your blog) that will be of interest to the reader. I then recommend writing reviews about the products you are selling on your blog. This will encourage the reader to follow the advice of someone who has use the resource in question and make the purchase so they can learn the same. You will find that if you sell a $7 to $10 ebook on your blogs, that actually work for the reader, that people will want to come to you to learn more. They will also be more willing to spend money for your products/services.
